Meeting History

Jul 13, 2015 7:00 PM  Township Council Regular Meeting

Councilman Chalet moved that this particular Resolution be deferred until the next Conference Meeting so that the topic could be discussed, which was seconded by Councilman Joanow. Councilman Chalet stated that he has many relatives of Hispanic descent but he still believes the matter should be deferred. Councilman Lopez stated that he disagreed and believes that the issue is of an emergent nature. A discussion of protocol took place between Mayor Venezia and Councilman Lopez. A discussion of when items can be placed on an agenda ensued amongst the Councilmembers. Mayor Venezia questioned whether every time a Republican candidate proposes something that is outrageous or egregious to some residents of the Township the Councilman planned on adopting a resolution opposing the proposal. Councilwoman Davis suggested that a revised Resolution be proposed in which an individual is not named directly, rather, the Council opposes the action against a group of individuals. Thereafter, a protracted discussion ensued amongst the Councilmembers.

Vote to defer the Resolution to the next Conference Meeting showed the following:

Jul 20, 2015 7:00 PM  Township Council Conference Meeting

Councilman Lopez moved a Resolution admonishing recent comments made by Presidential candidate Donald Trump, and offered statistics on the diversity in the Township to support its adoption, which was seconded by Mayor Venezia. Thereafter, Mayor Venezia stated that he thought the Resolution was not appropriate as Mr. Trump was not an elected official. Councilwoman Davis stated that while the content of the proposed Resolution was factually correct, that she thought that the Township should make an affirmative statement and suggested that she and Councilman Lopez work together to draft a piece of legislation to reflect such affirmative statements. Thereafter, a discussion ensued between Councilman Lopez and Councilwoman Davis discussing the merits of both of their positions. Comments were made by Councilman Joanow, Councilman Pomares, Councilman Chalet and Mayor Venezia. Councilwoman Davis again urged the Council to consider adopting legislation which would have a positive impact on the residents of the Township.

After the discussion, Mayor Venezia rescinded his motion made earlier, and asked that the issue be deferred to the next Conference Meeting during which time Councilwoman Davis and Councilman Lopez would work on fashioning a piece of legislations to incorporate the comments made by the Councilmembers.

Vote showed the following:

Councilman Chalet - Yes Councilwoman Davis - Yes

Councilman Joanow - Yes Councilman Lopez - Yes
